Im not the most computer savvy person myself, but from what i can gather one key difference between windows and mac is that in mac you can download and launch applications without actually installing them locally. However they wont have full access to your system and therefore may not work properly unless you install them locally. Often when installing apps they will appear greyed out until you drag their icon to the dock to complete the installation. Please feel free to correct me if im wrong.
