The fat's are just too old, moving parts like fan or disc drive. If you can find a fat PS2 that has been taken care of I would choose it over a slim for the HDD slot. But I have not have any issue with a slim PS2 besides the tracking coil burning out on the first model (Version 12) slim. I could agree that the laser are crap compared to the original PlayStation 2. I've been using a V14 slim with disc, and a V13 slim with a hard drive (HD loader/OPL) for many years now with no issue. Edit: The slim disc trays are quite annoying at first due to how thin it is.

Click to expand.Out of curiosity, what does the network adapter do that makes it better? I have an old phat anyway since i didnt like the slim when it came out, but due to the lack of stores in my area selling extra components I never saw one of those and never bothered with a HDD for it.

Anyway seems like you got a good deal from your friend actually. Now you need to go out and get a plug-and-play modchip going so you can play some good old fashion backups Memor32 + Freemcboot is nice if you go for it. Plus if you have the phat you can get HDLoader installed which might be another option for you if you prefer to not use physical media on it.
